Bareback riding came about many years ago and has some of the wildest action in
rodeo. The rider must "mark out" the horse, having his feet in the correct position on
the neck at the beginning of the ride. The cowboy holds on to a handhold made of
leather and rawhide (rigging) with one hand. Throughout the eight-second ride, with toes
turned out, the cowboy strives for optimum spurring action.
